Have you ever thought of immersing yourself in Japan's natural landscape or specifically the Mount Fuji, one of the World Heritage for New Year Countdown? Imagine gazing at the Mount Fuji and perhaps with the starry night while eating New Year's soba noodles (Japanese traditional dish) in a warm tent, how unique this kind of cultural experience will be for the foreigners! Camping in Japan is now more easily accessible for foreign travelers with various camping gear rental services [For details, click here]. Before you set out on your New Year Camping holiday, here are 3 SIGNIFICANT things to consider when planning your trip.
Campsite Reservation and Packing: Since the end of the year is one of the consecutive holidays in Japan, along with the rise in popularity of camping, this is considered peak season so campsites will be busy. You will probably need to set your preferred length of stay and book ahead. Remember to check the reservation opening date in advance as most of the campsites open for reservations in early October and some booking becomes available only by lottery. Japanese used to believe that the first sunrise of new year brings good luck; therefore, as far as i know, some people even came a week before the New Year's Eve for the 'best position' to experience it with Mount Fuji in the background.
Make sure you bring enough warm clothing for outdoors, sleeping bags rated comfort for much lower temperatures, cold weather/ 4 season tents, heaters, and other camping equipment. You may need rain gear if there is a chance of rain falling. It's recommended to check the weather conditions at the campsite a week before and a couple of days before camping.
Celebration Ideas for New Year: Plan several New Year's celebration activities to do at campsite. Such as eating Toshikoshi soba, or year-crossing noodles, playing traditional games like Hanafuda, or simply soaking in hot springs, etc. Some campsites have food trucks during this period offering seasonal special dining and other amenities for guests celebrating New Year with friends and family at the campsite.
Find the best pitch for your tent: You can opt for locations close to natural landscapes such as mountains, lakesides, or riversides. However, distance away from flood extent if you choose lakesides or riversides. Alternatively, you can choose close to amenities like toilets, drinking water sources, restaurants, and management building where it seems more convenient yet noisier as increased foot traffic near your camping pitch and you might be kept awake by lights at night. Lastly, try to use facilities like canteen or shower room early for the expected queues or crowds.
Safety First! Pay extra attention to safety. Winter in Japan can be quite cold, so prepare sufficient cold weather gear. Secondly, campfires are prohibited in Japan to avoid wildfires, but most locations allow you to bring a fire pit. Moreover maintain proper ventilation when using heaters inside tents. Finally, keep a close watch on pets and children to prevent them from getting lost. We look forward to having you join us for a New Year's camping experience in Japan!
